Storm shelter permits and registry in Oklahoma City

A plain-English overview, not legal advice. Confirm with your city before installing.

Permits

The City of Oklahoma City says a building permit is required to install an above- or below-ground storm shelter. Listed fees: $99.50 for in-ground or slope-top shelters and $104.50 for above-ground safe rooms. Questions: (405) 297-2525. (City of OKC)

Registering your shelter

After it's installed and inspected, register it on the City's free Storm Shelter Registry so first responders know where to look after a storm. You can also ask for automatic registration in the remarks of the permit application. Only shelters inside OKC city limits qualify.

Other cities

Edmond, Norman, Moore, Yukon, Mustang, Midwest City, Del City and Choctaw run their own permit offices. Check with yours; see the town pages for official links.
